London Spring 2013: Burberry Prorsum Goes for Bright and Shiny

The colors at Burberry Prorsum were so bold and brilliant, each look brought to mind a Jolly Rancher making its way down the catwalk.  Just as edible, notes of champagne, rose gold and white helped balance out the collection that Christopher Bailey sent out on Monday.  A tasty collection indeed.

For added detail, mini capes served as garnish in clear orange, soft neutrals or shimmering metallic.   The Burberry Trench was ever-present in a red and pink combo, soft blue or a grimy green that could only have worked in this particular collection.

The action didn’t stop at the shoulders; sleeves were pumped up for added drama that reached their climax right below the elbow.  To compliment the shine and the volume, a form-fitting slew of dresses hugged the models in every color of the rainbow – if it were an iridescent, pearly, shiny, metallic rainbow that is.

Bailey’s intentions were clear in his closing statement after the show,  “I wanted it playful, sassy and joyous with colors so intense you wring them out.”

Spring 2013 RTW Collections Inspired by Foreign Cultures

For two of fashion’s heavy-hitters, Diane von Furstenberg and Ralph Lauren, their Spring 2013 Collections found inspiration in the rich, vibrant cultures of India and Latin America, respectively.

Diane von Furstenberg has been hinting towards her spring collection inspiration since she shared her travel adventures with Vogue in “Passage to India: Diane von Furstenberg’s Photo Travel Diary.”  Her travels to the Palace in Jodhpur, the Taj Mahal, the local markets in Udaipur, Rajasthan and the Taj Lake Palace brought rich color, texture and detail to each look.

The traditional dress of South Asian women – from the sari to the shalwar kameez – were translated by von Furstenberg into a collection that can be worn from day to evening.

She’s always been known for understanding what women want and her ability to balance glamour with functionality have brought much success.

Another good quality – her open-minded views on technology.  During and after the show, select models, von Furstenberg, and Google cofounder, Sergey Brin were wearing Glass by Google prototypes, a spectacle-like apparatus that is capable of capturing images and much more.

Ralph Lauren stepped out of his all-American comfort zone and journeyed to Latin America for RTW Spring 2013.  The fringe, the embroidery, the tulle, the color.  The rich colors and textures.  All coalesced into a vibrant collection that brought to mind traditional costumes of Flamenco, Salsa or Pasa Doble dancers.

Each look had a sultry vibe as the show went from from casual to formal.  Accessories were heavy and diverse – from berets to bandanas – each model was adorned down to the last detail.

The show ended with a group of curve-loving gowns in red, black and white.  A stunning collection made for the Ralph Lauren woman who isn’t afraid to step out in something different every now and then.

Pantone.  A name that demands importance.  This seven lettered title governs the world of color.  And what, pray tell, does the world of color matter?  These seasonal hues are the voices inside designer’s heads pre-production, they are part of the building blocks of each new collection, they are the zeitgeist that has us all buying similar colors at once.  Pantone is trending at it’s finest.  So as we watched each Spring 2013 Ready To Wear look sashay down the runway, we realized there were some big tonal hitters going on when the flowers begin to bloom next year.

In light of Pantone releasing their 10 Spring colors for womenswear, here are the looks we noticed during New York Fashion Week and the colorways we will follow:

Trend Spotting: Spring/Summer 2013 RTW [Blue Hue?]

A stream of dresses for Spring/Summer RTW 2013 has us thinking of all things blue that nature has to offer.  Shades of blue brought to mind unique reflections on water, ice-cold glaciers, scattered clouds against a clear blue sky, or a moonlit midnight sky.

From patterned to solid prints and streamlined to flowing silhouettes, spring/summer will have you feeling blue – in a good way.

Trend Spotting: Spring/Summer 2013 RTW [The Crop Stop]

With the trickle of casual crop tops invading stores this summer, it seemed that perhaps they had seen their last day. Imagine our surprise when the Spring 2013 runways were nearly covered in them. The 90′s trend of showing all lengths of midriff became the theme of many designers, proving to us that this look isn’t going anywhere but up.

Trend Spotting: Spring/Summer 2013 RTW [Shades of White]

Now that we are just a day away from the spring shows ending in New York (that went fast, didn’t it?), certain trends have emerged faster than others and this time it seems great minds think alike. Yes, spring usually brings out the lighter color palettes and floaty fabrics, but this year we couldn’t help noticing all the crisp, clean whites gracing the runways like glaciers pointing out from chilly water. Beautiful.

Bonkuk Koo Spring/Summer 2013

Posted on September 11, 2012 by

R&B songstress Estelle opened the Bonkuk Koo Spring/Summer 2013 show presented by Stolichnaya Vodka.  The collection was inspired by the nine flavors of Stoli Vodka coupled with the designer’s detailed use of sculptural shapes.

Each look was a manifestation of the refined Stoli flavors projected onto a two-dimensional surface.  The final designs were chosen by ELLE Magazine readers across the country.

A delightful collection of silk georgette dresses  made their way down the runway in ivory, white, orange, red, black, orange, pink and nude.

Each dress was inspired by a Stoli flavor: Vanil, Razberi, Hot, Chocolat Razberi, Premium, Blueberi, Ohranj, Salted Karamel or Sticki.

Enjoy a taste of a few of our favorites below:

Left: Stoli Blueberi Dress with Silk Georgette and Orange Silk Hem.  Cardigan – White Spherical Shape 3-Ply Silk Georgette

Right: Stoli Hot Red Silk Georgette Dress with Red Silk Piping

Left: Stoli Sticki White Silk Georgette Dress with White Satin-Faced Chiffon Top

Right: Stoli Hot White Silk Georgette  with Red Symmetrical Sculptural Silk Inset

In January 2009, Bonkuk Koo was selected as “Emerging Fashion Designer of the Year” by International Design Award (IDA).  He also won first place in Haute Couture from IDA.   In 2008, he created two dresses for the opening event of S.O.F.A (Sculpture Objects and Functional Art) in New York.  After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2009, he worked at Chado Ralph Rucci alongside his lifetime mentor in fashion.  Following a four-year career at Ralph Rucci, he accepted a designer role at Encuentro Moda in Spain. His two solo exhibitions include one in New York in 2009 and the other in Seoul, Korea in 2011.

MBFW: Day 1 Re-Cap

It’s today, today! The day that marks the push to get Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week rolling! We’ve been checking in to YouTube’s Live From the Runway channel and re-watching the shows all morning over here in LA, feeling excitement all around. Bright and early, the digitally broadcast day began with Burning Man chic from Nicholas K, followed up by a show from BCBG that trickled down the runway like a dark romantic novel. Then we had some sporty spice from mister Richard Chai and lastly (at least for us online), the impeccable elegance of Tadashi Shoji. Below, we’ll walk you through four fabulous Spring 2013 Ready-To-Wear collections, accompanied by pictures courtesy of Women’s Wear Daily and Nordstrom.

;

Nicholas K

This brother and sister team started the day out nicely, showing a solid collection true to their functional, yet sophisticated form. The mens and womenswear pieces followed a very neutral and muted colorway, with dessert camels and tans swaying along with periwinkles, celeries, and rusts. The fabric was light, the flow was paramount, and the layering was essential. We are still seeing lots of sheer, lightweight fabrics and color blocked pieces in this line for Spring 2013.

BCBG Max Azria

The fan and critic favorite of the day seemed to come from the Bon Chic, Bon Genre crew headed by Max Azria. This show was a dream for those who love romance with an edge. Color-speaking, the palette was largely based off of one basic base – black or white…then paired with a blush, peach, periwinkle or lavender. Stealing the show, however, was BCBG’s use of texture. Each outfit was detailed with leather bondage casing and lace paneling that instantly added appeal. Aesthetically speaking, this entire collection was very linear, making the body less curvy, more slinky like they were wearing an updated version of boudoir lingerie. And while the silhouettes and prints remained very feminine, the model’s tousled hair and day old eyeliner with a swipe of rouge really balanced on the brim of rock and roll.

Richard Chai

Although in his profile picture on the MBFW website, Richard Chai can be seen donning a Nirvana tee…do not be fooled into thinking his collection reflects anything grunge. Quite to the contrary, Chai sent down a parade of sport and prep-school style today in his Spring Ready-To-Wear show. We continued to see that ever present periwinkle, then introducing a refreshing avocado. The colorway dropped off in the latter half of his show, getting into navy, charcoal and taupe areas…using color blocking and paneling to create dimension. For both menswear and womens, the feel was very Pleasantville meets futuristic, using iridescent fabrics and matrix-esque sequins and prints on classic button down shirts and A-line skirts. He kept things fresh and playful with floral bralettes, rib cage cut-outs, and shorts as bottoms in a suit pair.

Tadashi Shoji

Hold up…were we just watching a red carpet barrage or was that Tadashi Shoji’s Spring RTW collection? We swear any one of Shoji’s beauties (dresses, that is) will be waltzing down to receive awards on the likes of any famed actress or musician very soon. Each gown was a masterpiece, carefully crafted to grant it’s wearer poise and divinity, but with the utmost of confidence. We saw a different color on nearly every dress, from deep coral, watery cobalt, and springtime lilac to rich ivories and basic blacks. Lace stole most of the show’s attention, but in many different shapes and forms. There were collared shifts, off the shoulder sleeves, Grecian strapping, and tulle wrapping to make a whirlwind of ethereal fancy throughout.
