Interested In That Job Opportunity? [Don't] Apply Here

Don’t waste another minute of your time applying for jobs online. If you’re actively seeking new opportunities, you’ve probably already sent your résumé out to numerous companies in response to their online job posts. As you await a response, your confidence begins to diminish because your phone isn’t ringing and your email box is empty. There’s a better way!

Placing your career in the hands of a database is oftentimes unproductive – it’s time to make personal connections and build a network that will get you real results. We’re not affirming that applying to job advertisements is pointless, but it should serve as a complement to your larger, more diligent efforts.

Companies typically advertise open positions on their websites or via job boards, but don’t believe for a moment that someone is on the other end of that “Apply Here” button reviewing each submitted résumé. In truth, their applicant tracking system is sifting through the multiple applications and pulling the top matches based on the hiring manager’s search criteria.

1. What is your favorite part of your job?

Seeing a project come to fruition from conception. It’s very cathartic, inspiring, and a great way to make friends!

2. Who/What inspires you?

Music is primarily the thing that inspires me. Sometimes I feel like design is an extension of song writing. Similar process but different medium.

3. How did you get into your current career?

I sort of back ended into my career, as my background is in science—particularly marine and environmental. I hold a BA in Environmental Studies. However at school, through electives I was introduced to design and it sort of took off from there.

Gotta Start Somewhere: 11 Entry-Level Fashion Jobs

Whether you’re a new college graduate or you recently decided to pursue a career in the fashion industry and you don’t know where to begin, an entry-level opportunity is a great place to start. Typically, entry-level roles require no more than the appropriate degree and internships as they relate to the job requirements. Some work experience may be required, but every company and opportunity is different.

Although these roles are entry-level, hiring managers will expect you to possess the necessary technical skills, as they pertain to the job requirements. Additionally, support your résumé for creative and design roles with a portfolio or website displaying your work. You may be considered an entry-level candidate, but you have the work ethic, passion, and determination of a seasoned veteran.

Focus on your field of expertise and concentrate your search on roles that include “coordinator,” “assistant,” “specialist,” “junior,” or “generalist” in the job title. Entry-level opportunities will help you gain valuable work experience required to take your career to the next level.

1. Assistant/Junior Account Executive

You will provide administrative and showroom support to senior account executives and, in time, you may be given the responsibility of managing your own individual accounts. Sales support and customer service will consume most of your day while providing an opportunity to establish relationships with buyers. Hone your selling skills by absorbing product knowledge and demonstrating your ability to communicate effectively and achieve productivity goals.

2. Showroom Coordinator

Assist in the management of all samples including keeping inventory, pulling samples for clients and editors, maintaining sample order, and overseeing client mailings. Your office management expertise will prove worthy as you’re also responsible for shipments, computer maintenance, and office supply management.

3. PR Coordinator/Public Relations Assistant

The public relations team will look to you for assistance on everything from tracking coverage from national and international press to preparing weekly coverage recaps. Additionally, your support with the production of publicity collateral, product images, media alerts, press kits and press releases will be required under the guidance of upper-level staff. (more…)

1. What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is being able to participate in brainstorm sessions, and just flushing out as much copy or ideas as possible.

2. Who/What inspires you?

Life is totally a huge inspiration for me. Especially, living in NYC, you’re always seeing and experiencing a lot – giving me plenty to write about. Another thing that inspires me is other creatives (copywriters and art directors) whom I’ve met over the years.

3. How did you get into your current career?

Initially, I was creating writing and content for several lifestyle blogs that focused on men’s premium brands/urban street wear (before and during college). I started off my copywriting career working for an ad agency called Burrell Communications in Chicago. At the time, I’d just graduated from college and finished my portfolio classes (Columbia College Chicago) and decided to send the Chief Creative Officer, Lewis Williams, a message via LinkedIn.  Luckily, he replied back, brought me in for an interview, and gave me a chance to begin my career as a copywriter.

It’s Not That Difficult, Succeed In Any Industry

In order to be successful in any industry, one must be well-rounded and adaptable to different situations. Possessing the qualities that are required to excel in your field along with an unwritten list of the attributes of a good employee (soft skills) makes for the ideal combination. Making it also requires sincere passion for your career path and confidence in your abilities. Rising above the competition entails making a conscious effort to always place your best foot forward. We’re all capable of expressing the traits of a great employee if we’re mindful of the following tips:

1. Keep learning. As with anything, knowledge equates to power. Awareness of current and past news and events that are relevant to your career and industry will become your competitive edge. Choose publications that are dedicated to your industry and seek information that specifically mentions your employer and competitors and headlines that may pertain to your profession. You want to be able to initiate and take part in conversations.

2. Network. Many professionals make the mistake of losing touch with their contacts once they’ve started a new job. An oversight like this can be detrimental to your future as you never know when you’ll be in the job market again. Reaching out to a connection that you’ve been out of touch with for job leads only when you need them won’t go over well. A diverse network of talented individuals who share your passion can offer advice and further insight into their particular field. And be sure to return the favor with those looking to keep in touch with you.

3. Toughen up. You’ll be given advice that you don’t want to hear, judged and scrutinized from head-to-toe, and probably receive straight-forward feedback that you don’t think you need. Being able to push all of the noise to the side is not an easy task, but if you do, you can spend your time focusing on your career versus getting sucked into negativity. (more…)

It is rewarding to have a creative piece look great and also be effective and serve a purpose. I enjoy the process of making a design come together.

I am inspired by creative managers that are bright and communicate clearly about the project.

I started in this career by learning PowerPoint (I signed up with an temp agency and they had tutorials set up at their offices, so I took advantage of that). Your Résumé Has to Stand Out – No Excuses

When was the last time you updated your résumé? We mean really updated it? Regardless of whether or not you’re in the market for a new job, your résumé should disclose your most recent career move(s). We also suggest updating the design of your résumé to reflect current trends in your industry. For creatives, this could mean investing some serious time in résumé design. A cookie-cutter one-sheeter won’t do in today’s job market.

Overcome Awkward Interview Moments Like A Boss

You know that feeling you get when you walk out of a conversation and wish you had said or done something differently, but now it’s too late? Interviews are a perfect example. You’ll spend the rest of the day and the following days mulling over every detail until you drive yourself crazy.

We naturally approach stressful situations hoping for the best and can’t prevent the feelings of disappointment if we don’t get the outcome that we want. To counter this feeling, be proactive in your strategy before and during an interview.

Every professional has to deal with a crisis at some point in his or her career; view them as  opportunities to demonstrate how you perform under stress and how you would handle unexpected situations. If you find yourself in one of these awkward moments, attempt to salvage the situation on the spot versus beating yourself about it after the fact.

1. You’re bombarded with questions. Somewhere between the interviewer asking three questions at once and explaining why they are asking the questions, you forget the question. To ensure you cover everything, repeat the questions that you can remember and kindly ask: “Would you mind repeating the last question? I want to make sure I provide you with a thorough answer.” Don’t apologize and don’t fumble, just be sure to answer each question thoroughly now that they’ve been asked multiple times.

2. You bad talk your previous or current employer. Oh no, you let it slip, you’re not a huge fan of your boss’s methods. The ultimate offense of job interviews has been committed and there’s no turning back. The interviewer may sympathize with you, but you are certain they just silently crossed your name off of the short list. You can attempt to salvage this moment by turning the negative statement into an example of how you met the challenge and found a way to excel in your role for the good of the company and its goals.

3. You forget the interviewer’s name(s). If you’re having trouble recalling names, it may not bode well if you make it obvious to your interviewer(s). Prevent this from happening by trying one of these tricks: (1) neatly (and inconspicuously)  arrange their business cards (if provided) according to the order in which they are seated so that you can quickly glance at them when you need a reminder; (2) silently repeat the name ten times after hearing it, and try to repeat it out loud a couple of times at the start of the conversation; and (3) create an association between the name and something you know about the person (“Erin works in buying.”) or cross-reference it with something else (“My childhood friend’s name was Erin.”).
